Reimagining the First Day of Class – Strategies to Engage, Motivate, and Inspire

Brett Christie, Ph.D.
VP, Educational Innovation & Inclusivity

The first day of class is more than just a procedural hurdle—it’s a powerful opportunity to set the stage for success. In a packed and dynamic webinar, Engage, Motivate, Inspire: Reimagining the First Day of Class, over 300 higher education professionals came together to rethink how they approach their first moments with students. As VP of Educational Innovation at Alchemy, I had the privilege of leading this session, where we explored how to transform the first day from a syllabus review into an experience that fosters connection, builds community, and inspires curiosity.

A Shift from Routine to Impactful

The webinar invited attendees to rethink traditional approaches to the first day. It was emphasized that the tone set on day one can influence the entire semester, underscoring evidence-based strategies to humanize teaching, motivate learners, and engage students. From open, conversational polls encouraging students to share their expectations or interests to engaging activities like gamified syllabus reviews, participants explored practical ways to turn the first day into a springboard for success.

AI-Enabled Teaching Optimizers to Transform Day One

As part of the webinar, participants received a demonstration of Alchemy’s AI-enabled teaching Optimizers that help instructors quickly and effectively design meaningful first-day experiences tailored to their unique course contexts. These tools are designed to save time while ensuring thoughtful and engaging outcomes. The Optimizers shared include:

1. Design an Immersive First-Day Activity to Spark Curiosity

2. Failure as Growth: A Reflective First-Day Activity

3. Facilitating Learning Stories for Community Building

4. Involve Students in Developing Class Norms for a Respectful and Inclusive Environment

5. Gamifying Expectations: An Interactive Syllabus Activity

Each of these tools provides step-by-step guidance to transform ideas into actionable plans that make the first day of class impactful and engaging. If you’re interested in exploring these Optimizers for your own courses, you can access the collection on our Curie platform.

Key Insights from Participant Contributions

Participants not only absorbed the strategies shared during the session but also engaged actively in collaborative brainstorming through interactive tools like Padlet. Here are the most notable themes that emerged from their contributions:

Humanizing the Classroom

– Instructors shared their own stories, vulnerabilities, and journeys to create a sense of safety and belonging. One participant noted the power of sharing a “biggest learning mistake” to model growth and authenticity.

– Simple check-ins—such as polls asking how students are feeling—offered ways to acknowledge emotional states and build empathy.

Building Community Early

– Participants highlighted the importance of community-building activities, from interactive icebreakers to collaborative syllabus reviews. Strategies like student-created name tents and brief peer interviews stood out as ways to foster early connections.

– New ideas included using identity portals to reflect on cultural values and aspirations, deepening connections between peers and the course content.

Gamification and Engagement

– Gamified syllabus activities, such as Kahoot quizzes, captured attention as a way to make syllabus review engaging and interactive.

– One attendee shared plans to start class with a “mystery” challenge, blending curiosity with course relevance.

Curiosity and Content Relevance

– Activities linking course topics to students’ lives and communities resonated strongly. Examples included “Myths vs. Facts” exercises and discussions around thought-provoking questions like “What would you do if you had $1 million to start a business?”

A Springboard for the Semester

– Many attendees emphasized revisiting first-day themes throughout the semester. This approach ensures continuity and reminds students of the goals and values set on day one.

New Directions Sparked by the Session

Toward the end of the session, participants shared ideas they were inspired to try in their classrooms. From interactive syllabus podcasts to creative writing activities like “I am” poems, attendees left with a wealth of fresh approaches to bring into their courses. One of the most impactful takeaways was the collective focus on fostering trust and creating a safe learning environment, especially for students who may feel vulnerable on the first day.

Your Turn to Transform Day One

The energy and engagement in this webinar underscored the importance of reimagining the first day of class as a moment of connection and possibility. Whether you’re an instructor looking to spark curiosity, a faculty developer aiming to support others, or an instructional designer crafting engaging materials, these strategies can inspire transformative change.
