Mapping Coursework to Career-Connected Skills

 

As institutions continue to prioritize career readiness and workforce alignment, a familiar question is resurfacing across higher education: how do we help students clearly articulate the value of what they’re learning without overhauling every course? In our recent webinar, we spoke with Tameka Battle, Ed.D. (LaGuardia Community College @ CUNY) and Tony Pittarese, Ph.D. (East Tennessee State University) to explore practical strategies for connecting coursework to career-relevant skills, tools, and deliverables employers value. Using real-world examples at both the course and program levels, the conversation focused on making learning more transparent, transferable, and meaningful for students while supporting institutional goals around student success and employability.

When students understand why their work matters beyond a grade, engagement and ownership increase. Clear career signals help learners see purpose in their assignments and make informed choices about how to represent their learning.

Instead, it calls for clarity, alignment, and intentional communication, helping students translate what they are already learning into language and artifacts that travel with them into the workplace.
