Joyful Teaching in Challenging Times: Practical Ways to Renew Energy & Support Student Success

In our latest webinar,
Joyful Teaching in Challenging Times, Alchemy’s Brett Christie, Ph.D., welcomed educator, author, and faculty development leader Flower Darby to explore how educators can reconnect with purpose, energy, and fulfillment in their work. Drawing on research in positive psychology and insights from her new book, The Joyful Online Teacher: Finding Our Fizz in Asynchronous Classes, Flower shared practical strategies for supporting both educator well-being and student success.

Key Takeaways

1. Joy and challenge can coexist

Finding joy in teaching doesn’t require ignoring the very real challenges facing higher education. Instead, Flower encouraged participants to acknowledge those challenges while intentionally creating space for renewal, meaning, and connection.

2. Educator well-being matters

Drawing on the PERMA framework of human flourishing, Flower highlighted how positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment contribute to well-being. When educators flourish, they are better equipped to support student learning, engagement, and persistence.

3. Small actions can have a big impact

Rather than focusing on large-scale changes, Flower emphasized the power of small, sustainable practices. Simple moments of connection, reflection, gratitude, and celebration can help educators rediscover the “fizz” that drew them to teaching in the first place.

4. Belonging supports learning

Students are more likely to engage when they feel welcomed, valued, and connected to a learning community. Creating opportunities for academic belonging benefits not only students, but educators as well.

Looking Ahead

At a time when many educators are balancing increasing demands and ongoing change, Flower reminded us that joy is not a luxury. It’s an important part of sustaining meaningful teaching and learning.
