At this level “Full AI” of the five-level AI Assessment Scale (Perkins, et al., 2024) students can use AI to complete any elements of the tasks, with students directing AI to achieve the assessment goals. Assessments at this level may also require engagement with AI to achieve goals and solve problems.

Assignment Overview:
In this assignment, you will write an original short story in the science fiction genre. You are encouraged to use AI as a creative companion throughout the process, from generating ideas and developing characters to writing dialogue and structuring the plot. The objective is to harness AI’s potential to enhance your creativity while producing a cohesive and engaging narrative.

Objectives:

  • To explore and develop creative writing techniques in the science fiction genre.
  • To use AI tools as a creative partner in the writing process.
  • To critically integrate AI-generated content into your narrative.

Instructions:

  1. Brainstorming and Idea Generation:
    • Begin by using AI to brainstorm plot ideas, character profiles, and potential settings. AI can help you explore different narrative possibilities and suggest creative twists.
    • Reflect on AI-generated ideas and decide on the central theme, characters, and plot structure of your story.
  2. Character and Setting Development:
    • Use AI to flesh out character details, including backstory, personality traits, and dialogue styles. AI can also help you visualize settings and create detailed descriptions.
    • Evaluate AI’s suggestions and refine them to align with your creative vision. Ensure that characters and settings are fully developed and consistent throughout your story.
  3. Writing and Structuring the Story:
    • AI can assist in drafting sections of your story, providing narrative transitions, enhancing descriptions, and generating dialogue. Use these AI-generated sections as a foundation to build upon.
    • Integrate AI-generated content into your narrative, ensuring a seamless flow and coherence in the story’s progression.
  4. Final Draft and Review:
    • After completing your story, use AI tools for final editing and polishing. AI can help improve grammar, style, and readability.
    • Review the final draft to ensure that your creative intent is preserved and that the story meets the assignment’s objectives.
  5. Reflective Commentary:
    • Write a reflective commentary (2-3 pages) explaining how AI was used throughout the creative process. Discuss how AI influenced your writing, the challenges you faced, and the decisions you made to integrate AI-generated content.
    • Include any AI-generated materials (e.g., character profiles, plot ideas) as an appendix to your final submission.

Evaluation Criteria:

– Creativity and Originality (40%): Demonstrating imaginative use of AI in creating a unique and engaging science fiction story.
