Assignment Title: Translation of a Short Story

Course: SPAN 303: Advanced Spanish

Due Date: [Insert Due Date]

Assignment Overview:
In this assignment, you will translate a short story from Spanish to English (or from English to Spanish). The purpose of this assignment is to assess your language proficiency and your ability to capture the nuances, tone, and cultural context of the original text. The use of AI tools for translation is strictly prohibited; your translation must be entirely your own work.

Objectives:

  • To demonstrate proficiency in translating literary texts between Spanish and English.
  • To capture the nuances, tone, and cultural context of the original text in your translation.
  • To enhance your language skills by engaging deeply with the text without AI assistance.

Instructions:

  1. Read and Understand the Short Story:
    • Begin by carefully reading the short story in its original language (Spanish or English). Pay attention to the nuances of the language, the tone, the cultural references, and any idiomatic expressions.
    • Consider the overall meaning of the story and how best to convey that meaning in the target language.
  2. Translate the Story:
    • Translate the story into the target language (English or Spanish). Focus on preserving the tone, style, and cultural context of the original text while ensuring that the translation is clear and fluent in the target language.
    • Pay special attention to difficult passages, idiomatic expressions, and cultural references, and find appropriate equivalents in the target language.
  3. Revise and Refine:
    • After completing your translation, set it aside for a day or two before revising. This will help you see your work with fresh eyes and make more objective improvements.
    • Revise your translation to ensure that it is accurate, fluent, and faithful to the original text. Pay attention to the flow of the language and the clarity of your translation.
  4. Final Submission:
    • Submit your final translation by the due date. Ensure that your translation is well-organized and clearly presented, with attention to grammar, style, and readability in the target language.
    • Since AI use is not permitted, ensure that your translation is entirely your own work.

Evaluation Criteria:

–  Accuracy of Translation (40%): Demonstrating an accurate translation that faithfully represents the original text.

– Nuance and Cultural Sensitivity (30%): Capturing the nuances, tone, and cultural context of the original story in the translation.

– Fluency and Clarity (20%): Producing a translation that is fluent, clear, and well-written in the target language.

– Writing Quality (10%): Ensuring that the translation is grammatically correct and stylistically appropriate for the target language.

Academic Integrity:
This assignment must be completed without any AI assistance. Use of AI tools to generate or assist with the translation will be considered a violation of academic integrity. Your submission must reflect your own language skills and understanding of the text.
